IEEE Senior Membership Information

The benefits of becoming an IEEE Senior Member are:

·         The professional recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence

·         An attractive fine wood and bronze engraved Senior Member plaque to proudly display

·         Up to $25 gift certificate toward one new Society membership

·         Upon request, a letter of commendation to your employer on the achievement of Senior member grade

·         Announcement of elevation in Section/Society and/or local newsletters, newspapers and notices

·         Eligibility to hold executive IEEE volunteer position

·         Can serve as Reference for Senior Member applicants

·         Invited to be on the panel to review Senior Member applications

The requirements to qualify for Senior Member elevation start with the requirement that you are an IEEE member; you can apply for membership at the same time that you submit your application for elevation. You must have a degree in any of the following: Engineering; Computer Sciences and Information Technology; Physical Sciences; Biological and Medical Sciences; Mathematics; Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law and Policy. Also, you need 10 years of professional experience, but your time in school counts as 3, 4, or 5 (bachelors, masters, doctorate) of those years. You must also show five years of “significant” performance, which can be: Substantial engineering responsibility or achievement (team leader, task supervisor, program manager, etc.); Publication of papers/books/inventions; Technical direction/management with evidence of accomplishment; Recognized contributions to the welfare of the profession; Development or furtherment of scientific/engineering courses; or Contributions equivalent to those above in such areas as technical editing, patent prosecution or patent law.

To become a Senior Member, first ask three Senior, Fellow or Honorary Members to nominate and provide a reference for you. This is the preferred method of providing references, because presumably they will know you personally. However, if you don’t know any Senior, Fellow or Honorary members, email the Atlanta Section Membership Development Chair (currently vice-chair@ieee-atlanta.org) and the Atlanta Section’s Senior Elevation team will identify, contact and follow-up with references for you. If you need such assistance, please include a resume, description of accomplishments, awards, etc., when you contact us. We will then provide you with the names and member numbers of your references. When you have the names and member numbers of those who will serve as your references, complete the membership application at http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/senior-members/index.html.  Applications are more likely to be approved if you attach your resume/CV to the application. After you submit your application, you can check the status of the submission of your references at http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/senior/status.html . When all your references have been received, the IEEE Admission and Advancement (A&A) Review Panel will review your application and let you know if you’ve been elevated to Senior Member. The A&A panel meets several times throughout the year; in 2010, they met 9 times.

That completes the process of applying for Senior Member. Yes, it’s really that simple!
