News and announcements from the Section ...

Most informational meetings in the Atlanta Section are hosted by its chapters. Society chapters and special-interest chapters coordinate activities focused on a particular technical specialty or career interest. For a list of local chapters, or to view the current schedule of meetings, use one of the links on the left.

In case you didn't know ...

Want to know more about IEEE? If so, then we offer our own brief introduction to IEEE and the Atlanta Section, together with links to more information.

The IEEE is an international non-profit association of electro-technology and information-science professionals that includes more than 370,000 members in over 160 countries. The letters I-E-E-E are usually pronounced "Eye-triple-E".

The full name of the IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.; but the IEEE is much broader than that name implies. The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the development and application of engineering-related science and technology.

The IEEE is active in such diverse fields as information technology, power generation and distribution, aerospace systems, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, consumer electronics, telecommunications and many many more. The IEEE is also active in related fields such as engineering management, technology policy and many community activities. All these activities support the IEEE Vision:

To advance global prosperity by fostering technological innovation, enabling members' careers and promoting community worldwide.

The IEEE is a volunteer-driven association, with many subordinate groups focused on different elements of member, professional, and community service. IEEE has groups focused on a particular technical specialty, called societies; it has groups focused on particular types of professional service; and it has groups focused on particular geographic regions.

The principal organizational unit in IEEE focused on "local" activities is called a section. The Atlanta Section covers nearly all of northern Georgia and serves the needs of more than 4,000 members in its territory. The Atlanta Section is a sub-unit of IEEE Region 3, which covers the southeastern U.S. and Jamaica. Region 3 is one of 10 regions throughout the world.

Region 3 Global IEEE

The IEEE is truly a global organization. However, there is a subordinate unit in IEEE focused on the career and public policy interests of IEEE's U.S. members. That unit is called IEEE-USA. You can explore the activities and services of IEEE-USA through the following link.
